Malta, Gozo and Comino form one of the Mediterranean’s most accessible diving destinations. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres, water temperature ranges from 14°C in February to 27°C in August, and the surrounding seabed offers a remarkable mix of reefs, caverns, drop-offs and over a dozen scuttled wrecks within recreational depths.

- Um El Faroud, Żurrieq — 110m tanker scuttled in 1998, sitting upright at 36m.
- HMS Maori, Marsamxett Harbour — WWII destroyer at 14m, perfect for novices.
- P29 & P31, Cirkewwa — ex-patrol boats at 12-38m, easy shore entry.
- Santa Marija Caves, Comino — swim-throughs at 7-14m, full of light and life.
- MV Karwela, Xatt l-Aħmar (Gozo) — photogenic wreck dive at 40m.
Practical notes
Diving operates year-round. Most schools are based in Sliema, St Paul’s Bay, Cirkewwa, Maršalforn and Xlendi. PADI, SSI and BSAC certifications are widely available, with Open Water courses typically run over 3-4 days. Maltese waters are notably free of dangerous species — no sharks, no jellyfish swarms, no strong currents at most sites — making the islands ideal for first-time divers and snorkelers alike.
