Kalkara Marina Malta

The quiet alternative across the harbour

Kalkara sits on the eastern side of the Grand Harbour, opposite Valletta and just across from Vittoriosa. The marina is smaller and more modest than Grand Harbour Marina or Msida, and rates reflect that. For owners who want a Grand Harbour location without the price tag of GHM, this is the obvious answer.

The area is residential, low-key, with a handful of waterfront restaurants and a swimming spot at Rinella Bay just around the corner. It feels less polished than Vittoriosa but more like real Malta, which some people prefer.

Berthing

Mix of pontoon berths in the inner creek and alongside on the outer wall. Capacity for boats up to about 25 metres on the outer arm, smaller in the creek. Annual rates are competitive, often 30 to 40 percent below GHM for an equivalent size. Daily transient available but limited in season.

Mediterranean mooring on the pontoons. Power and water on most berths. No fuel berth on site, the closest is Msida. No haul-out facilities, again Msida or one of the south-coast yards is the option.

Surroundings

Kalkara village is small, walkable, and has a couple of good restaurants on the waterfront and a few more in the village proper. Bus links to Valletta via the Three Cities take about 25 minutes. The fishing village of Marsaskala is a 15-minute drive. For provisioning, smaller stores in the village handle daily needs, larger supermarkets are a short drive away.

Practical notes

Approach into the Grand Harbour is straightforward and Kalkara is a short run inside, past Vittoriosa and into the eastern creek. The water inside is well sheltered. Call the marina office before arrival in summer because berthing space is tight and the office prefers to walk a yacht in rather than have you wandering around looking for a slot.
