Where Grand Harbour Marina sits in Malta’s marina scene

This is the prestige berth. Tucked into the historic Vittoriosa waterfront under the walls of Fort St Angelo, with views straight across the Grand Harbour to Valletta, it’s the most photogenic marina in Malta and one of the most photogenic in the central Mediterranean. The setting alone is reason to base a yacht here.

The marina is part of the Camper & Nicholsons group and operates to international standards. It accommodates yachts from about 10 metres up to genuine superyachts of 100 metres alongside the deeper berths near the entrance.

Berthing and rates

More expensive than Msida, by some margin, and that’s the deal. You’re paying for the location, the service level and the deeper water. Annual contracts for a 15-metre yacht sit somewhere around 8,000 to 12,000 euro. Daily rates in season for a 20-metre yacht land at 150 to 250 euro. Superyacht berths are negotiated individually.

Surroundings

The Vittoriosa waterfront has gone from semi-derelict to fully restored over the last 20 years. Restaurants line the marina edge, ranging from casual to properly serious dining. The Three Cities, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, are all walkable and full of small streets, churches, palaces and bars. A water taxi to Valletta is a five-minute crossing.

Practical notes

Approach into the Grand Harbour is one of the most dramatic in the Mediterranean, with the bastions of Valletta on one side and Fort St Angelo on the other. Call the marina on channel 13 before entering. Cruise ship traffic is heavy from April through October, hold off the entrance if a ship is manoeuvring, the wash is significant. The marina is well sheltered from all directions but the entrance can be uncomfortable in fresh easterlies.
