The southern alternative
Birzebbugia sits on Malta’s south coast, a working town with a fishing tradition, a sandy bay called Pretty Bay, and proximity to the freeport. It’s not a marina town in the way Msida or Vittoriosa are, but for owners cruising the south coast or wanting to base a smaller boat away from the busy north, the moorings here are a real option.
Most berthing is on swing moorings in the bay rather than alongside pontoons. The bay itself is shallow at the head and deeper toward the entrance, with sand bottom in the middle and rockier patches near the edges.
Mooring and anchoring
Swing moorings are managed locally and rented monthly or seasonally. Annual rates are well below north-coast marina pricing, often half or less for an equivalent size. Anchoring in the bay is possible in 4 to 8 metres on sand, with reasonable holding. The bay is well sheltered from the dominant northwesterly summer wind and from north and east. South to southeast winds make it untenable, so check the forecast.
No fuel berth, no chandlery, no marina services on the immediate waterfront. The town has supermarkets, restaurants and a fishing boat slipway. For yacht services, you’re driving north to Msida or south to Marsaxlokk.
Surroundings
Birzebbugia is a residential and beach-going town, with Pretty Bay as the main public attraction. The freeport is the visual neighbour and is busy with container traffic, which some find atmospheric and others find intrusive. The wider south coast, including St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk, Delimara and the cliffs at Munxar, is all close by water.
Practical notes
Approach from the southeast around Delimara point. Watch for fishing boat traffic in and out of Marsaxlokk and the freeport’s commercial movements. The bay itself is straightforward once you’re inside. Mooring contacts are typically arranged through local fishing cooperatives or word of mouth rather than through a formal marina office. For shorter stays, anchoring is the simpler option.
