What St Thomas Bay is
St Thomas Bay is the long inlet south of Marsaskala on Malta’s southeast coast. Lined with traditional boat houses, summer cabins and a couple of beach kiosks, it’s a low-key local spot that doesn’t show up in tourist brochures. By boat it’s a useful anchorage on a south-coast cruising day.
Anchoring
Sand and weed bottom in 4 to 8 metres. Holding is reasonable, set the anchor in sand patches rather than weed. Shelter is excellent from the dominant summer northwest. Easterly winds bring swell straight in and make it untenable.
Practical notes
No full restaurant on the waterfront, just kiosks and seasonal bars. Tender ashore at the small slipway. The swim is unspectacular but pleasant, with shallow water near the head and clearer water further out. A worthwhile stop combined with Marsaskala for lunch and Pretty Bay later in the day.
