What makes Ramla different
Ramla l-Hamra, the red sandy beach, is Gozo’s signature beach. The sand is genuinely orange-red, the colour comes from iron oxide in the local clay, and the contrast against the turquoise water is striking. The bay is wide, undeveloped on the cliffs, and feels considerably more wild than any of the comparable beaches on Malta itself.
Anchoring
Sand bottom in 4 to 8 metres across the bay. Holding is good. North coast position means the bay is exposed to northerly weather and comes alive with swell when the Grigal blows or even a fresh Majjistral with northerly component. In summer settled conditions it’s calm and the anchorage is excellent.
Watch for the dropoff toward the cliffs at either end of the bay, the bottom comes up to rock quickly. Stay in the central sandy area.
Practical notes
Kiosks on the beach in summer, basic facilities, lifeguards. Tender ashore in calm conditions. The swim is excellent, the sand is warm to walk on, and the cliffs at either end have caves worth exploring with a snorkel. Combine with Calypso’s Cave above the bay for context, and pair with San Blas just round the corner for a north-coast Gozo morning.
