What Golden Bay is
Golden Bay, Ramla tal-Mixquqa in Maltese, is the biggest sandy beach on Malta’s west coast. Long stretch of golden-brown sand, low cliffs at either end, and the Radisson hotel perched on the headland to the north. It’s one of the most photographed beaches in Malta and properly busy in summer.
Anchoring
Sand bottom across the bay in 4 to 9 metres. The west-coast position means it’s exposed to the dominant summer northwesterly, which builds swell across the open Mediterranean fetch and rolls into the bay. On a calm morning the anchorage is excellent. By 2pm on a typical summer afternoon, swell is rolling through and boats are pitching. For a swim stop, this is a morning bay, not an afternoon one.
In proper west-to-northwest weather, conditions become marginal and you’re better off going elsewhere. Easterly weather is the only time it’s properly settled.
Practical notes
Full beach facilities, restaurants, lifeguards, water sports operators. Tender ashore in calm conditions only, a building swell makes landing difficult. The neighbouring Ghajn Tuffieha to the south offers similar conditions but with less developed facilities. Combining Golden Bay morning, Gnejna afternoon is a classic west-coast itinerary when the weather behaves.
