What Ghar Lapsi is
Ghar Lapsi is a rocky inlet on Malta’s south coast, beneath the Dingli cliffs and just east of the Blue Grotto. There’s no sand here, just rocky platforms, a small fishing boat slipway, a couple of restaurants and a swimming pool of clear water surrounded by limestone. It’s a properly local spot, with a strong following among Maltese who grew up swimming here in summer.
From the water it’s a small inlet rather than a bay, with little space to anchor and significant rock. Most boat access is by tender from a larger boat anchored offshore, or by smaller motorboats and RIBs that can tuck into the inlet itself.
Anchoring
No proper anchorage in the inlet. The shore drops to deep water quickly with rocky edges. For a swim stop, anchor offshore in 8 to 15 metres on a sand patch and tender in. South-coast position means good shelter from the dominant summer northwest, but the bay is exposed to anything from the south.
Practical notes
Local restaurants on the rocks do simple Maltese fare and are worth the visit. The swim itself is genuinely excellent, with clear water and underwater rock formations that make for fun snorkelling. Combine with the Blue Grotto, just round the corner to the west, for a proper south-coast morning. The cliffs above are spectacular and the whole stretch from Wied iz-Zurrieq to Ghar Lapsi is one of Malta’s underrated coastal runs.
